A group of Year 11 pupils were recently given a unique opportunity to step inside one of the UK’s leading aerospace and defence facilities, as BAE Systems welcomed them to its Academy for Skills and Knowledge (ASK) in Samlesbury.

The visit offered students a first-hand look at the cutting-edge environment where future engineers and technicians are trained. Pupils toured the state-of-the-art building, explored interactive workshops, and learned about the company’s highly regarded apprenticeship programme — a pathway that has helped thousands of young people launch successful careers in engineering and advanced manufacturing.

Students themselves described the day as eye-opening. Many were particularly impressed by the chance to engage with current apprentices, who shared their experiences of training at BAE and offered advice on applying for future roles.

The ASK facility is designed to nurture the next generation of talent by combining classroom learning with hands-on technical training. With the aerospace and defence sector continuing to grow, BAE Systems’ apprenticeship scheme remains one of the most sought-after in the region, offering opportunities in disciplines ranging from aircraft maintenance to software engineering.

For the Year 11 pupils, the visit was more than just a tour — it was a glimpse into potential futures. Brownedge expressed gratitude to BAE Systems for opening its doors and providing such a memorable experience. The visit not only broadened pupils’ horizons but also strengthened the link between education and industry, ensuring that young people are better prepared to make informed choices about their next steps.
