Home Learning and Use of AI

Home learning is set at Brownedge St Mary’s:

  • To help pupils make more rapid progress in their learning.

  • To develop pupil competence, interdependence and study skills.

  • To engage parents and others in pupils’ learning.

  • To provide valuable life experience of managing time and working to deadlines.

  • To consolidate and extend work covered in class or prepare for new learning activities.

  • To inspire our learners, including through embracing new technologies and AI.

  • To create guided opportunities for reading outside of school.

We encourage parents and carers to get involved in their child's home learning, so that, as a team, every child can achieve their potential.

How can you help at home?

Parental and carer input to support study at home has been proven to positively impact academic achievement. We work in collaboration with home to help our school community fulfil their God-given potential. Here are some simple strategies, which would undoubtedly benefit your child/ren at home:

Supporting Responsible Use of AI

AI tools can be helpful for learning, but young people need guidance to use them safely, ethically, and effectively.

Talk About When AI Can Help

Encourage your child to use AI for:

  • Understanding difficult concepts

  • Checking their own ideas

  • Generating revision questions

  • Planning essays or projects

  • Practising explanations or testing knowledge

Discuss What AI Should Not Be Used For

  • Completing homework or coursework for your child

  • Copying answers directly from

  • Avoiding independent thinking or reading

  • Accessing inappropriate content

Make sure that your child understands that work submitted for home learning must always be their own.

Monitor and Guide Their Use

  • Ask your child to show you how they are using AI tools.

  • Remind them to double-check any AI-generated information, as it may not always be accurate.

  • Encourage them to use AI as a support, not a shortcut.

Promote Digital Safety

  • Ensure your child is aware of privacy and data-sharing risks when using online tools.

  • Remind them never to share personal information, photos, or location details with any platform.

  • Use parental controls where appropriate and know which apps or sites your child is using.

Encouraging Academic Integrity

  • Reinforce the importance of honesty and originality in schoolwork. If your child has produced a piece of work on their own, it is their intellectual property. They may wish to use it through AI to better their skills and knowledge, but that is their choice.

  • We recommend changing the settings of your AI platform to ensure it is not training its model with your inputs.

  • Talk about plagiarism and what it means.

  • Encourage your child to use AI as a tool to improve their work, not to replace their own thinking.

If you are unsure how best to support your child or have concerns about their online behaviour or study habits, please contact the school. We’re here to help and can offer further guidance on digital safety, AI use, and effective home learning.
