Pilgrim of Hope Journey at Brownedge St Mary’s Catholic High School

January – Launch Jubilee Year with Jubilee Celebrations of the Word

In this Jubilee year, we are called to embrace the spirit of renewal, reflection, and hope, as we journey together as Pilgrims of Hope. As pilgrims, we are reminded to walk with compassion, carrying with us a sense of optimism and solidarity as we face the challenges of the world. As part of Salford Diocese, we were delighted to receiving the Anchor of Hope from our friends at St Mary's and St Benedict's primary school. We celebrated in school with a blessing of the Anchor, attended by all our pupil leaders as pilgrims of hope with commitment to justice, service, peace, and care for one another. Our GIFT pupils delivered the anchor to St Paul's RC Primary in Feniscowles. We are very proud to have been a part of the Anchor’s journey as it makes its way around the Salford Diocese.

February – Offer a sign of HOPE to someone

As part of our Lenten giving, each form collected donations through the St Joseph’s Penny Box Appeal, raising money for Caritas and their vital work supporting the homeless. Every penny contributed helps provide shelter, food, and care for those in need, reinforcing our commitment to charity and compassion during Lent.

We also focused on the example of St Oscar Romero and how we can speak out for the marginalised and against injustice. Pupils made pledges to fast from anger and act with compassion. We also launched our Caritas Care Package Appeal, where each form contributed items to create care packages for the homeless and vulnerable, which will be distributed through Caritas. This initiative highlighted our commitment to justice and supporting those in need. The generosity of all who donated is making a real difference!

April – Take ACTION for our LOCAL community

In reflecting on the glory of Jesus through the Transfiguration, our pupils focused on sharing their own gifts with others. They pledged to care for God’s creation through acts of stewardship, while also taking part in the CAFOD Big Lent Walk to raise funds for those in need. Through their walk and a non-uniform day, our school community raised over £800 for CAFOD, showing the power of faith in action. A special thanks to our Social Action Leaders, whose hard work and dedication helped organise the event and inspire others to get involved. This was a wonderful way to live out our Lenten promises, coming together to pray, fast, and give in support of a great cause.

In the final week of Lent, we focused on reconciliation and encouraged students to seek forgiveness and embrace diversity. Pupils pledged to fast from ignorance and support others with dignity and respect. Our charity afternoon, featuring form stalls like face painting and a penalty shoot-out, raised over £1100, concluding our Lenten journey with generosity and community spirit.

May – PRAY for our global family

We held Interfaith Week at Brownedge - an event where we were celebrating and learning about different faiths, with an array of activities and guest speakers. Guests included Rabbi Zvi teaching us about Judaism, and sessions on Hinduism led by our special guest Aruna Patel. We were also privileged to welcome Hifsa Haroon-Iqbal and Jaswinder Singh for workshops on Islam and Sikhism respectively, while our annual Mary Day celebrations truly embodied Brownedge’s determination to pray for our global family.

June – Take ACTION for our GLOBAL family

In June 2025, as a school community we celebrated Refugee Awareness Day. The theme for the year was ‘Community as a Superpower.’ Viktoriia Murych from the Ukraine and the Community Development Coordinator from the Lancashire Refugee Integration Team spoke to pupils and spoke to our Equalities and Inclusion group about the importance of welcoming people finding a home in the UK. The group also arranged an inter-house quiz on this theme. In our collective worship we reflected on the Holy Family being refugees as they fled Egypt and how the Church and our faith ask us to be people of love and welcome.

July – PRAY for our local family

On the last day of the school term our whole school gathered at St Mary’s church for a Celebration of the Word on the theme, JOY. It was an opportunity to give thanks to God for all we achieved during the academic year. Symbols were brought forward to represent these activities along with giant letter spelling the word JOY. We reflected on when we love Jesus Others and Yourself we find true happiness and joy.

December Jubilee Celebration Day – Pledge Day & Sculpture

In December, we had our Pledge Day where each form group used the ‘See, Judge, Act’ model to create a pledge to build a fairer world. These pledges will become social action plans for each form over the coming years. We concluded the Jubilee Year with a whole-school Advent Celebration of the Word at St Mary’s Church, where our pledges were presented.

As part of the celebration, we brought forward our Brownedge Jubilee Sculpture, based on the Jubilee logo and made up of small boats from every pupil in our school community.

As we look forward to the future, we do so with renewed hope and pray, ‘Stay with us Lord on our Journey’.
