In a memorable event just before the half-term break, Brownedge School had the honour of welcoming local Member of Parliament Maya Ellis for a special visit aimed at engaging students in the workings of British democracy. The visit marked a continuation of the school’s commitment to civic education, following earlier student trips to Parliament where pupils had the opportunity to witness democracy in action firsthand.

During her time at Brownedge, MP Maya Ellis met with a group of enthusiastic pupils, taking part in a lively Q&A session that covered a wide range of topics. Students asked insightful questions about the responsibilities of an MP, the legislative process, and pressing local concerns affecting their community. Maya offered students a glimpse into the daily life of a parliamentarian and the challenges and rewards of public service.

She also shared personal reflections on her work in the House of Commons, highlighting key national issues she is passionate about, and her visit provided students with a rare opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world political experience.

With pupils already having visited Parliament earlier in the term, the school is building a strong foundation for future leaders who understand the value of participation, dialogue, and public service.

Staff and students look forward to more opportunities to connect with policymakers and deepen their understanding of the democratic process.
